We are investigating lawsuits involving the pharmaceutical Tepezza. Some patients treated for thyroid eye disease (TED) with Tepezza are experiencing hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or other ear-related issues.
Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)
TED, or Graves' Eye Disease, is an autoimmune condition that affects the eyes, causing symptoms like inflammation, redness, and bulging eyes. Up to 50% of Graves' disease patients develop eye abnormalities.
FDA Approval and Labeling
Tepezza was approved by the FDA in January 2020 for treating Thyroid Eye Disease (TED). Studies showed that 85% of patients experienced side effects, including hearing loss in 10% of cases, which were reported to be reversible after stopping the drug.
Scientific Studies
Numerous studies and case reports highlight the link between Tepezza and hearing loss.
These studies have reported the following:
- One study found that 10% of patients experienced hearing loss during clinical trials.
- One study found that 46% of patients reported otologic symptoms like hearing loss and tinnitus.
- Other studies have reported changed in hearing function linked to Tepezza treatment, have recommended audiograms and tympanometry for monitoring patients on Tepezza, and documented hearing impairment in a clinical trial setting.
Tepezza Hearing Loss Lawsuits
On August 25, 2022, a lawsuit was filed against Horizon Pharmaceuticals Inc., a subsidiary of Horizon Therapeutics PLC, on behalf of Daniel Weibel, an Arizona man. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (1:22-cv-04518), the case alleges that Horizon Pharmaceuticals failed to warn the public and regulators that Tepezza could cause hearing loss and tinnitus.
This lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff suffered permanent hearing loss after receiving Tepezza infusions, without prior knowledge of these severe risks. The lawsuit states that many others have experienced similar issues and accuses Horizon Pharmaceuticals of deliberately ignoring safety concerns and not properly studying Tepezza’s safety and efficacy.
Current Status of Tepezza Lawsuits
There have been no settlements in the Tepezza hearing loss or tinnitus cases yet. However, a multidistrict litigation (MDL) has been established in federal court in Illinois, with our firm serving on the Executive Committee.
The creation of an MDL is the first step towards settlement negotiations. Once formed, the discovery of facts and trials can begin, paving the way for settlement discussions.
Potential Compensation
Compensation in these cases can vary based on the severity and type of injuries. Settlements typically cover:
- Past and future medical expenses
- Pain and suffering, both mental and physical
- Lost Wages
- Pain and suffering from injuries, treatment, and recovery
- Other economic losses
- Possible punitive damages
